AMERICAN HOMESCAPE: States Trees + State Architecture + Landscape

Every US State has their bird, their flower, their tree...I'm interested in the way people build houses, with materials and forms that are emblematic of that area. What if each state had a State Architecture? I drew small houses and cottages that seemed to capture the architectural essence of each state, from my own experience. I paired them with the state tree and nestled both into the topographic landscapes of the state. Once each State was drawn, I was so excited to put them all together, like a US Map Puzzle!  The outline of the USA began to emerge...

Here are 48 contiguous States, with their cottages and trees, and city hearts, in place as individually designed. Houses and trees mashed on top of each other...this Map needed some ironing out! The result is the Map at the top of this post - and Printed, below.

Here they are - sort of geographically hung on my wall. Now, I waffled over Texas and Oklahoma. Is OK. in the Midwest? Is TX. its own region? Some (from Carolina) even say Virginia's not The South...  It's an exclusive club and membership and debatable. Well, here's The South as it settled out for me.

NYR 2014

I love the clean slate and fresh start and longer perspective of the NEW YEAR - and making goals! This year, I plan to make a lot of new drawings of places I love.

ATLANTA Streetscapes

We toured Atlanta by day, watched Gone With the Wind by night. We wanted to know the story of the burning of Atlanta, on the ground. Where would we find buildings that survived the burning, if any?  Turn of the Century, early Twentieth Century architecture illustrates the city's comeback in the Fox Theater block, with the Georgian Terrace Hotel directly across from the theater on Peachtree Street. What a dynamic space. I could only imagine it glittering before and after the shows in the twenties, womens' jewels and gowns glittering with the art deco chandeliers and marquis bulbs.

Virginia Highlands presented another cohesive block, seemingly built at once in a boom, but to resemble accretion over time by varying the rooflines and details from shop to shop in the early twentieth century languages of craftsman, art deco and traditional styles.
