AMERICAN HOMESCAPE: States Trees + State Architecture + Landscape

Every US State has their bird, their flower, their tree...I'm interested in the way people build houses, with materials and forms that are emblematic of that area. What if each state had a State Architecture? I drew small houses and cottages that seemed to capture the architectural essence of each state, from my own experience. I paired them with the state tree and nestled both into the topographic landscapes of the state. Once each State was drawn, I was so excited to put them all together, like a US Map Puzzle!  The outline of the USA began to emerge...

Here are 48 contiguous States, with their cottages and trees, and city hearts, in place as individually designed. Houses and trees mashed on top of each other...this Map needed some ironing out! The result is the Map at the top of this post - and Printed, below.

I'm reading about the North Atlantic [Warren Boeschenstein's Historic American Towns along the Atlantic Coast] while drawing this series. While I have an open love for the South and the Mid-Atlantic is my home, I have a secret love for the Northeast. It's 'secret' because I've only traveled north of New York once. My girlfriends and I rambled up the coast as far as Acadia. Perhaps it was the tragedy of forgetting to bring my camera on this trip, but my desire to return to these rugged beaches, mom and pop shops and inns, and quiet, cozy towns and farms has been ripening for years now...Hope to visit north again soon - when the winter is over!

NYR 2014

I love the clean slate and fresh start and longer perspective of the NEW YEAR - and making goals! This year, I plan to make a lot of new drawings of places I love.

Last Bits of Christmas: FREDERICK, Maryland

On a very cold and windy December 31, 2013 -

- Frederick's East 4th Street revealed Christmas dressings still mostly pristine on stately rowhouses.

The colors of Christmas and the colors of historic rowhouses complemented -

Red doors were inadvertently festive, as well as scalloped window shades.

A single red velvet bow askew made a sea green door a holiday portal.

Even a gated narrow passage between buildings which punctuates Frederick's streetscapes comes alive with a Christmas planter.

Celery is a perfect backdrop to delicate piney wreaths - 

- and brass bells watched over by a brass eagle on this blue double door, which must shine at night when those string lights turn on.

On Market Street, the shop windows are shifting from Christmas the the New Year, and we caught the wreaths on the front door of VOLT restaurant just as they were being taken down, at the end of their holiday lives.
