Here they are - sort of geographically hung on my wall. Now, I waffled over Texas and Oklahoma. Is OK. in the Midwest? Is TX. its own region? Some (from Carolina) even say Virginia's not The South...  It's an exclusive club and membership and debatable. Well, here's The South as it settled out for me.

This one is Stanton Hall, 1857.

From The Most Beautiful Villages and Towns of the South: Ramsey, O'Kain: "Natchez first fluorished in the cotton boom of the early 1800s, and by mid-century was one of the wealthiest cities per capita in America. Natchez in Mississippi, and Charleston, in South Carolina, stood as civilized bookends to the entire South. For the most part, Natchez citizens engaged in the trade of cotton from their perch on the Mississippi River, and built 'suburban estates,' massive town houses set on twenty or more splendidly landscaped acres. They have no equal anywhere, when taken as a collection."

Oxford, Mississippi

It was late, and I'd been driving a long time, weary. Oxford was a beautiful sight, a place of warmth and civility after the miles of dark highway. As I neared Oxford, I'd listened on npr to a talk by a producer on the making of a film of a book by William Faulker. I passed Faulkner's house on my way to the Courthous Square. There is a reverence for him in his town.
The glow of Oxford lasted me through to Memphis... This is what Oxford looks like in the daytime. Someday I'd like to see that.
